? School Vouchers Approved in Senate
The program will officially launch at the start of the 2026-27 school year.
I personally think the private school voucher program is a good idea. For parents who have already been considering private school, it offers a bit of confirmation that their choice matters and is valid. I do understand the concern about how this could affect the public school system—especially if tax dollars are being split—but to be honest, the families who could already afford private school have been paying for it entirely out-of-pocket. This program would just put a small amount of money back into their pockets.
In Houston, private school tuition can easily reach $30,000 a year per child—and that doesn’t even include the cost of extracurriculars, uniforms, or additional fees. The vouchers don’t cover the full cost, but they do offer some relief, especially for middle-class families who are stretching to provide that kind of education for their kids.
I get that it’s a complex issue. But I think there’s room to support individual family choices without necessarily abandoning the public system. There just needs to be a thoughtful balance in how these programs are designed and implemented.
